Donkeys on the Cotswold Farm Park
On the Farm Park we have five Sicilian donkeys, made up of four Jenny's and one Jack.
The Sicillian Donkeys, also known as the miniature Mediterranean donkey, is a small breed of domestic donkey originating from the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia

Origin & History of Sicillian Donkeys
They are descended from the African wild ass, they were traditionally used in the hilly regions of Sicily to carry small loads, transport water, and help on small farms.
They are now rare or nearly extinct in their native Mediterranean lands due to past crossbreeding.
They have a unique appearance
- Usually gray with a lighter muzzle and a dark, cross-shaped stripe along the back and shoulders.
- This patterning has given the Sicilian donkey the nickname “the holy cross donkey”.
Loveable and full of character
With their long ears, expressive faces and distinctive voices, donkeys are enduring Farm Park favourites. The Sicilian donkeys are one of the most affectionate and friendliest of the donkey breeds. Generally tame and gentle, they seek attention from humans.
Donkeys are thoughtful, highly social animals that benefit from living in companionable groups or bonded pairs. Their behaviour is sometimes incorrectly described as stubborn, when they are often carefully assessing a situation before deciding how to respond.

- What age for Sicillian Donkeys live to? When well cared for, Sicilian donkeys may live up to 35 years, making them lifelong friends for both humans and other animals.
- What were donkeys used for ? For 1000's of years, donkeys have been used for transportation, pulling wagons, carrying heavy loads and powering farm machinery. Even in today's world donkeys are still a main source of agricultural power because of their strength and hardy nature in many countries such as Ethopia and China.
- How big are Sicillian Donkeys? The African donkey is on average 56” tall at the shoulder while the Sicillian donkey grows to just 34" tall.
- What do Donkeys eat? In the wild Donkeys will eat a range of plants, but primarily they eat hay, grains and grass.
- What is the difference between a Donkey and a Mule? Mules are bred from male donkeys and female horses . A female donkey that breeds with a male horse produces a hinny. Mules are typically bigger than donkeys.
