Highland Cows and Calves on the Cotswold Farm Park
On the Farm Park we have six adult Highland Cattle including Ted the bull. You can see them on our Rare Breed trail or you can sign-up to our Highland Cow Experience to experience a unique opportunity to get up close to these beautiful animals.
Yara and Yasmin have both recently given birth to two Highalnd calves, so you can also come and see both Highland calves on the Farm Park!
Highland Cows
Origin & History of Highand Cattle
Highlands are one of the oldest registered cattle breeds in the world, originating in the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. They have adapted to survive harsh, wet, windy conditions and survive on poorer-quality grazing that other breeds might struggle with.
They have a unique appearance
- Highlands actually have two coats ! Their long, shaggy double coat (a coarse outer layer and a soft, insulating undercoat) can actually come in a number of different colours too.
- They have long, wide horns to help them forage for food in snow and as a way of defending themselves aganst predators
- Due to the terrain they live in they have a stocky, compact build
Gentle Giants
Despite their imposing horns, Highlands are often quite gentle in nature and generally calm and friendly. You will see on the Farm Park they are often happy to come up and say hello to visitors.

After a short safety briefing, we will talk to you about the Highlands, the farm team taking you through the history of the breed, you’ll get to brush and feed them with tonnes of great photo opportunities, plus take home a highland cow themed memento from the shop!

Ted the Bull
Ted our Highalnd Bull joins us from Cannon Hall Farm in Yorkshire, where he’s somewhat of a household name. Born in 2019, Ted is
an award-winning bull who has been loaned to us so we
can continue growing our Highland Cow fold.

FAQs
- How many Highland Cows do you have on the Farm Park? We have six adult Highalnd Cows but we are very pleased to announce that we have two new Highland calves that have just been born. So we now have eight in total.
- Why does Ted the bull have a ring in his nose ? It’s a pain-free way of keeping Ted under control. It’s not used very often - good to have in an emergency though.
- What colour coats do Highland Cattle have? Our Highland cows are red and black, but Highlands can also have yellow, silver and white coats.
- What do Highland Cattle eat? Highland cattle are known for being hardy grazers that can thrive on much rougher forage than most cattle breeds. Their diet typically includes grass, their main food source when grazing outdoors. Unlike many breeds, they can happily eat coarse vegetation like heather, bracken, rushes, gorse, and scrubby moorland plants that other cattle would avoid. In the winter they will also eat hay.
- What is the Highland Cow Experience? This is a new unique experience where you can get up close to our Highlands. The experience includes an opportunity to brush and feed them with lots of amazing photo opportunities.
